I run quality control for a custom-manufacturing shop. Before any part goes to a customer, it passes through my desk. I have reviewed roughly 200 unique orders a year for the past four years, and in Q1 2024 I rejected about 6% of first deliveries because the actual part didn't match the agreed spec. Most of those issues were guessable before upload. This checklist is the short version of what I tell our engineers when they order parts from Sculpteo's 3D printing service.
This is for anyone using Sculpteo's 3D printing service in 2025: engineers, product designers, procurement people, and even parents who are helping a kid with a school project. The fundamentals haven't changed since 2020 - good parts start with good files. But the execution has transformed. What used to take a chain of emails and two weeks now happens inside an online dashboard.
Who this checklist is for
Use this if you are about to upload a part to Sculpteo and you want to avoid the classic failure loop: order placed, part arrives, dimension is wrong, reorder, repeat. I have lived that loop. In March 2023, a batch of 40 parts looked perfect on the surface. Then I checked the calipers. Wrong. The finish was fine, but a mounting hole was 0.4 mm off, which meant the whole assembly didn't line up. We rejected the batch and the vendor redid it at their cost. The cost to us was a week of waiting.
There are five checks. Do them in order.
Step 1: Check the model before you upload
Uploading a file is not the same as checking it. On Sculpteo's online 3D printing service, the uploader will accept a lot of STP or STL files. That does not mean they are printable.
Three things, in order:
- Units. If you designed in inches and upload as a millimeter file, your part will be 25.4 times larger than intended. I know this sounds basic. Last year, an outside designer sent us a bracket that was somehow scaled by 10x. The quote came back at $900 instead of $90. The file itself was the problem.
- Wall thickness. If a wall is thinner than the material allows, you will get a hole, not a wall. The minimum depends on the material listed in Sculpteo's design guides.
- Manifold edges. Open meshes cause slicing errors. Most uploaders will flag this, but check before, not after.
It took me four years and roughly 300 orders to understand that most print failures don't happen at the printer. They happen before upload. The printer runs exactly what the file says. If the file is wrong, the part is wrong.
Step 2: Pick the right technology and material
The Sculpteo online 3D printing service is not just an FDM print farm. According to Sculpteo's website (sculpteo.com), the platform provides online quoting for 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding, and laser cutting. That means the quote you get is only useful if you chose the right process.
Why does this matter? Because a part that looks like a good 3D print might be a bad CNC part, and vice versa.
Two examples I have seen:
- A square reamer is a cutting tool. It needs tight tolerance, a specific cutting edge geometry, and usually a full metal body. In most cases, that is a CNC machining job, not a 3D-printed plastic part. If you upload that geometry to Sculpteo, the system may suggest machining. Listen to it.
- A custom ingrown nail cutting tool is a different story. If you are making a one-off or low-volume run, 3D printing in a biocompatible resin or stainless steel can make sense. But it is not a default PLA job. Ask about biocompatibility, surface finish, and any required cleaning before you approve a material.
I'm not a materials scientist, so I can't tell you exactly which resin to use for that nail tool. What I can tell you from a quality perspective is: don't let the quote default to a hobby material if the part is for medical or repeated contact use.
Step 3: Read the quote as a contract, not a number
Sculpteo's online quote appears quickly. That speed is convenient, but it creates a bad habit: people look at the total, nod, and click buy. I do the opposite. I read the line items.
Check:
- Unit price vs. total price. If you are ordering a run of 200 parts, the unit price should make sense.
- Layer height or surface finish. A standard finish may be enough; a polished finish costs more and takes longer.
- Lead time. A promised date is a contract. If the quote says 5 business days, do not plan on 3. (Should mention: I usually add a buffer of 2 days after the promised date.)
In Q1 2024, I caught a quote error because the quantity discount had not applied. The total was about $800 more than it should have been for the volume. I didn't notice because the calculation was wrong. I noticed because I checked the line items. That's the whole job: pay attention.
Step 4: Write down your acceptance criteria
Before you click purchase, write down what a passing part looks like. This sounds overkill for a prototype. It isn't.
I learned this the hard way. The upside of approving a shipment without written criteria was saving one day. The risk was receiving parts that were cosmetically fine but functionally wrong. I kept asking myself: is a day saved worth a redo plus a customer who loses confidence? No. Now every order I place has a note either in the order form or in our internal file: critical dimensions, surface requirement, tolerance where it matters.
Sculpteo's order process has a notes or special instructions field. Use it. For a CNC part, you can note deburring, edge break, or specific threads. For a 3D printed part, you can note orientation, support removal, or matte finish. You don't need a perfect spec sheet. You need enough detail that the inspector on the other side knows the difference between pass and fail.
Step 5: Inspect like you mean it
When the box arrives, don't look at the surface and call it done. I've made that mistake. (Actually, I've seen it more than I've made it, but I did it once with a bracket in 2022.)
Grab a caliper. Check the dimensions that matter. Check the holes with the pin or fastener that goes into them. If the drawing says a hole is 6 mm, a 6.05 mm hole might pass, but 6.40 mm is not a pass.
One more thing: inspect the first article before you accept the whole batch. If you order 50 pieces, do not sample one. Sample five. In a bad batch, the first piece is usually the one that looks best. The fifth may show the process drift.
Can kids use 3D printers?
Yes, with adult supervision. This question comes up a lot, especially after schools publish photos of 3D printed projects.
If a child designs a model in Tinkercad or another beginner tool, an adult should handle the account and the file checks above. The child can learn the design part, but the upload and purchase should go through a parent or teacher account. That's not because 3D printers are dangerous in a scary way. It's because a chargeable order and an adult review process work better when the adult is in the loop.
Sculpteo's platform is not a toy, though. The online service is designed for professional manufacturing, so treat it like one. Let kids design; let an adult approve.
Common mistakes and final notes
Here are the mistakes I see most often:
- Ignoring the recommended minimum wall thickness. (Then calling support to ask why the part has a hole.)
- Designing in one unit and exporting in another.
- Choosing a visually shiny material when the mechanical requirement needs something stronger.
- Ordering a custom nail cutting tool or any reusable tool without checking biocompatibility and cleaning requirements.
- Rushing the lead time. A rush order can be twice the price, and the same printer still needs time.
Is the online quote price accurate? Usually, but verify current rates. This pricing and process overview was accurate as of Q1 2025. Sculpteo changes materials and lead times, so check the site before you budget.
One last thought. In 2020, the phrase 'online 3D printing service' meant a file upload and a hope that someone would reply to an email. In 2025, the same phrase means automated quoting, multiple manufacturing processes, and traceable orders. The technology moved. The basic quality checks haven't. Run the checklist.
